TecTalk: What does an Ignition Coil do?

Ignition coils play a crucial role in modern engine management. Without them, an engine simply wouldn’t start – let alone run efficiently. At its core, the ignition coil is a high-voltage transformer. Its job is to convert the battery’s low voltage into the high voltage required to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the engine.

Here’s how it works:

Converts Battery Voltage into High Voltage
A vehicle’s battery supplies just 12 volts. The ignition coil transforms this into 15,000 and 40,000+ volts needed to generate a strong spark.

Delivers Spark to the Spark Plugs
Once amplified, the voltage is sent directly to the spark plug. This creates the spark that ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber.

Supports Engine Start and Combustion
Without a reliable spark, combustion cannot take place. The ignition coil ensures smooth engine start-up and consistent firing across all cylinders.

Works in Sync with the ECU
Modern ignition coils operate in precise coordination with the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU determines exactly when the coil should fire, ensuring optimal timing for performance and efficiency.

Like any component, ignition coils can wear over time. It’s important to recognise early warning signs before they lead to further engine damage. A failing ignition coil leads to misfires, poor performance and unexpected breakdowns.
